Cortland NY – The Spartans outlasted the Crush in a heavyweight bout at Tompkins Cortland Community College. The Spartans got out to a big lead early when they scored 6 runs in the top of the sixth inning.
The Crush would respond in the bottom of the frame when Robby Harrison hit a rbi triple that scored Matt Doherty and after Carson Cherry walked a triple off the bat of Jamison Howland cut the lead down to 6-3. Cortland would add on one more in the bottom of the third when Zach Young scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Robby Harrison.
Cortland took the lead with a three run inning in the bottom of the fourth. Carson Cherry led off with a double and Thomas Woodridge brought him home with a single before being out trying to advance to second base on the hit. Cortland kept its momentum as Zach Young and Ryne McKinney reached base before a pair of wild pitches and a balk allowed Young to score. McKinney would score on a base hit from Jack Coogan to give Cortland 7-6 lead.
Syracuse would retake the lead with four runs in the top of fifth but the Crush answered right back in the bottom. Robby Harrison led off getting hit by a pitch and he scored on a triple by Carson Cherry. Cherry was then driven in by Jamison Howland and the score was 10-9 after 5.
Syracuse scored two more to expand the lead in the top of the sixth but the Crush answered once again as Jack Coogan scored on a double by Matt Doherty and a balk brough Doherty across the plate.
Syracuse would then shut down the Cortland offense the rest of the way and a three run seventh and a 10 run tenth allowed the Spartans to go home with the 25-11 win.
Cortland is back at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex tomorrow for a double header with the Rochester Ridgemen with game one starting at 5:00.
