Crush vs Silversmiths – Recap – 6-2/10-7

Sherrill NY – Cortland split a double header with the Sherrill Silversmiths on Wednesday afternoon.

Cortland used the long ball to their advantage in game one of the doubleheader as three different hitters smacked one out of Noyes Park. In the top of the third inning Jake Freed lifted one deep over the right field wall and two batters later Ryne McKinney joined in on the action when he lined a homer over the right centerfield wall to give the Crush a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning Matt Doherty reached on an error and then Hayden Henry joined in on the action, launching a monster shot over the right field wall to extend the lead to 4-0. Sherrill got on the board with a solo shot of their own to make it 4-1 after 4.

Cortland tacked on 2 two more insurance runs in the top of the sixth when Matt Doherty got a one out single and then scored on a triple down the left field line from Hayden Henry. Nick Mahar then drove him in with a rbi single through the right side of the infield.

Cortland starter Harry Tavella pitched a complete game and allowed just two runs on 4 hits and struck out 3 enroute to the win in game one.

Cortland fell behind early in game two and trailed 7-0 after three innings. Cortland wouldn’t go down without a fight as Jake Freed, Zach Young, and Jack Coogan all got on base before Joe Manesiotis hit a bases clearing double to make it 7-3 after 6 innings. Sherrill extended the lead back to 10-3 before Cortland staged a ninth inning comeback.

With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh Robby Harrison walked to score Nick Mahar and Jack Coogan walked to plate Jake Freed. Joe Manesiotis then delivered with a 2 RBI single to make it 10-7 before Sherrill closed it out.

Cortland has the day off tomorrow before returning to the road to take on the Salt Cats at 7:00 at Onondaga Community College Friday Night.
